Tranquility of the Stellako
The surface of the Stellako River appears calm and serene but the clouds (above and reflected) suggest a storm is imminent. The photograph was taken alongside Yellowhead Highway #16 a short distance west of Fort Fraser. Although it cannot be seen in this photograph, Fraser Lake lies a very short distance ahead and to the left and drains through the Nautley River (at less than one kilometre in length being one of the shortest rivers in the world) into the Nechako, a river located a ways east of the Stellako.. Besides being rich in historical respects (with history dating back to Simon Fraser establishing a fur-trading post near Fort Fraser in 1806) the area has much to offer tourists and anyone involved in outdoor activities, such as viewing lava beds, numerous species of migrating birds (including Trumpeter Swans) and Native pictographs, and participating in water sports, some of Canada's best sports fishing, hiking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing, to name a few.
